Having media (videos, photos, GIF’s), location, polls, quotes and reply tweets NOT count towards your 140 character limit, allows now users to post longer tweets.
The feature was announced back in May, and yesterday Twitter finally made good on its promise and started rolling it out across its user-base.
Although originaly there were thoughts on increasing the tweet limit to circa 10.000 characters, these were finally abandoned for a more conservative approach that will not alter the ’short-message’ identity of the platform.
